What is Permaculture

Posted by on Sep 15, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

Permaculture as a word was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in 1979 uniting the ideas of Permanence (or Sustainability) with Agriculture (or Farming).  Permaculture is the study of design which focuses on implementing systems that support abundance and ecological wellbeing based on working with nature. Since it’s conception, Permaculture has grown into a thriving culture, an ever-evolving synthesis of ideas, concepts, and practices. Permaculture reaches into Health and Wellness, Natural Building, Appropriate Technologies, Human Relations, Education, Governance, Finance, and all elements of Life including Art and Music, Celebration and Ceremony, Rites and Ritual, Birth, Death, and Everything in between….

Permaculture can also be conceptualized through 3 Foundational Ethics:
<->Care for Mother Earth <-> Care for Oneself <-> Care for Community<->

Permaculture then takes form through principals of…

  • Observe & interact
  • Catch & store energy
  • Obtain a yield
  • Apply self-regulation & accept feedback
  • Use & value renewable resources & services
  • Produce no waste
  • Design from patterns to details
  • Integrate rather than segregate
  • Use small & slow solutions
  • Use & value diversity
  • Use edges & value the marginal
  • Creatively use & respond to change

In essence Permaculture is a foundation and design system for thriving human/ecological connections, it is a way of life, a culture, where we can have abundance and benefit our environment.  It is a way where we can live the modo of making choices that positively effect 7 generations after us.  There is a path to a brighter future, and we are designing it, living it, loving it.  Dive into your own potential and be the change you wish to see in the world.

Permaculture is life in balance.

What is Fruition?

What is Fruition?

When my family and I landed in Costa Rica on our veggie-oil school bus RV, we were road weary and ready to sink our roots into a piece of land that we could call home.  After 6 months of travel, we found a place that felt like home.  We bought the land and got to work, building infrastructure, cutting back grass and planting bio-diverse gardens and food forests.  This felt like the Fruition of our journey, so we decided to name our farm Finca Fruición (Fruition Farm in spanish).

So, what exactly does Fruition mean?

fru·i·tion

fro?o?iSH?n/
noun: fruition; plural noun: fruitions
  1. the point at which a plan or project is realized.
“the plans have come to fruition sooner than expected”
    • the realization of a plan or project.
“new methods will come with the fruition of that research”
  2. literary
the state or action of producing fruit.

This is exactly what we we feeling when we unpacked the bus and began eating the ripe fruits from the land.  We had reached a fruiting point in our long journey of finding a home.  Not just from our travels together as a family, but as a life path.  We were ready to realize our dreams, raise our family, and learn to become self-reliant through ecological design.

Fruition to me is all about reaping the rewards of hard work.  In the book, “The Profit” Kahlil Gibran writes:

“You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth.  For to be idle is to become a stranger onto the seasons, and step out of life’s procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.  When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of hours turns to music. …When you work you fulfill a part of the earth’s furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born, and keeping in yourself with labour you are in truth loving life.  And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life’s inmost secret.  … And when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself and to one another and to Creator.  And what is it to work with love?  It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth.  It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house.  It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat that fruit.  It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit.  … Work is love made visible.”

In this way, the fruits of labour are the fruits of love, the fruition of our work the offering to existence itself.  There is a saying, “sweat your prayers”  which means that our labour, our dance, the physiological process of sweating is a prayer, a celebration for the wholeness of life.  It is being so alive that we grow, shift, change, and evolve.  The fruits of labours of love are the fruition of the soul.  This is the primary goal of the Fruition Center, to inspire people to work together in harmony towards service to the whole planet.  We celebrate the fruition of ecology, culture, health, and well-being.  We celebrate our gifts and support each other’s work.  WE work every day in service to the whole and each project, design, or meal is a living song of gratitude, then the seeds of the fruition of that work spread far and wide and take root in the hearts and lives of all who participate sweating their prayers.  The time for lazy idol lifestyles of human comfort are coming to an end, to remember to labour in love, we empower ourselves to reconnect with the earth and all the ecosystems that form the web  of life.

This is what fruition means to me, and a part of the embodiment of our little space of love called Finca Fruición, the Fruition Center.

With love and gratitude for the process and the sweet taste of fruition.
